How can I know if therapy is for me?

Sometimes things happen in life that hold us back. Maybe a dysfunctional or traumatic childhood is impacting your life as an adult. You may be experiencing overwhelming or persistent negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors or negative patterns in your relationships. Problems in your significant relationships, family issues, career problems, grief and loss, life changes, low self esteem, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress--any number of situations, issues, and problems can cause someone to need help. If you feel bad more than you feel good, you could likely benefit from therapy.

PLEASE--IF YOU ARE IN CRISIS AND ARE FEELING THAT YOU WANT TO HARM YOURSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE, SEEK HELP IMMEDIATELY BY CALLING 911.

What is therapy like?

Therapy sessions are a safe place for you to talk about the problems, relationships, and issues in your life that are causing you to feel unhappy. Our job is to help you figure out how to resolve those issues in the best way for you. We will never tell you what to do--your life is yours--but we will help you in every way that we can to find your own answers to get the results that you need in your life. Sessions are usually 60 minutes, though longer sessions can be requested. Initially, weekly sessions are the most helpful; sometimes more frequent sessions are needed if a client is experiencing a crisis situation. They don't call therapy "work" for nothing--it can be hard to resolve an emotionally painful history or experience. The end result is SO worth it, though. Successful therapy can result in you feeling that 1000 pound monkey is off your back and free you up to live a good life with contentment and joy.

How will therapy help me?

Therapy can help you in many ways. Sometimes just having an objective listener to talk to, who listens without judgement, can be a huge relief. We can give you another way of looking at whatever you are dealing with or give you ideas or concepts to think about to help you gain insight about the problem and possible solutions. We can also provide psychoeducation that might help you figure out your own behavior or the behavior of others in your life. Generally, the more motivated you are and the more effort you put into applying the concepts learned and discovered in therapy, the greater the benefit to you. Therapy can help you:

  • Develop a better understanding of yourself and others
  • Clarify what you want for your life and how to get it
  • Resolve issues or problems that are causing you to feel unhappy or dissatisfied
  • Improve your relationships and increase intimacy in your significant relationships
  • Learn to better manage daily stress and serious life stressors, changes and transitions
  • Learn to decrease and better cope with negative feelings such as anger, sadness, anxiety, etc.
  • Recognize and change patterns of behavior that are negatively impacting your life
  • Improve problem solving and conflict management skills
  • Improve self-esteem and increase confidence in yourself
  • Develop healthy personal boundaries for yourself and others
  • Develop a more positive, joyful life experience

Can I use my health insurance or Health Savings Account/Flexible Spending Account for therapy?
I am currently an out-of-network provider for all insurance companies and can work with you as an out-of-network provider. Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Tricare are currently pending; I will indicate in this section when I become in-network with those insurance companies. It is a good idea to contact your insurance company and ask them about mental health benefits when using an out-of-network provider. Keep in mind, that you must meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis for insurance to reimburse you for treatment and that most insurance companies do not provide reimbursement for couple counseling. I am happy to provide you with a detailed receipt to file with your insurance company, if this is what you would like to do. I am also quite willing to try and help you find a provider who is in-network with your insurance company if this would better meet your needs.

Do I HAVE to use my health insurance to pay for therapy?

There are significant benefits to paying fee-for-service/out-of pocket for therapy. Insurance companies will not be involved in decision-making about therapy services or impose limits on treatment services provided. Additionally, details about your treatment and your private therapy information remain private and are not required to be provided to an insurance company. It is my goal to provide you with premium therapy services on our terms--yours and mine--without interference from outside the therapeutic relationship--whenever this is possible and best meets your needs.

How much does therapy cost?

Investing in therapy is a serious choice to significantly improve your life by healing your heart, improving your relationships, encouraging positive growth in your family, and nurturing your good life. Budgeting to accommodate choosing happiness is something that can be accomplished if this is important to you.

Using your Health Savings Account/Flexible Spending Account for therapy can save money as those accounts are pre-tax.
